Adult Clinical Care Track Responsibilities

The demand for Hospice and Palliative care is rapidly growing within the United States and there is a corresponding need for fellowship trained Hospice and Palliative Medicine trained physicians. Our fellowship started with the traditional adult track. Currently consisting of 2 matched spots, we have had a diverse set of residency-trained physicians complete the fellowship, including those with backgrounds in General Surgery, Neurology, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, and Internal Medicine.

The breakdown of the Adult fellow's clinical care track is as follows:

  • VA geriatric population -  10%
  • Pediatric palliative care - 15%
  • Hospice care (rural and urban) - 20%
  • Continuity clinic at Huntsman Cancer Hospital - 20%
  • Long-term care - 10%
  • Pain management - 5%
  • Inpatient palliative care consult service - 20%

Pediatric Clinical Care Track Responsibilities

Our pediatric fellowship offers a robust and well-rounded experience rooted in pediatric training, from long-term care and hospice to inpatient consults, and extending into other arenas of Hospice and Palliative Medicine in order to produce the best possible board certified pediatric Palliative Care physicians.

The breakdown of the Pediatric fellow's clinical care track is as follows:

  • Pediatric inpatient palliative care - 30%
  • Pediatric hospice care (rural and urban) - 20%
  • Continuity clinic (choice of 3 pediatric options) - 15%
  • Pediatric long-term care - 15%
  • Pain management - 5%
  • Adult inpatient palliative care - 15%

Emergency Medicine Clinical Care Track Responsibilities

Emergency Medicine physicians are no strangers to suffering and death and are often with patients when they come to an important crossroads in their medical care. As the gatekeepers of the hospital, that can have a tremendous impact on the trajectory of our patients’ care and are uniquely situated to be able to guide patients and their loved ones through that process. 

The University of Utah Palliative Care fellowship is offering an Emergency Medicine track within the HPM fellowship. This track is designed to give the new emergency medicine graduate the same excellent training in HPM, while also allowing for continued growth of your EM skill set by providing the fellow with a guaranteed (4)  EM attending shifts per month during their fellowship year.

The breakdown of the Emergency Medicine fellow's clinical care track is as follows:

  • VA geriatric population -  10%
  • Pediatric palliative care - 15%
  • Hospice care (rural and urban) - 20%
  • Continuity clinic at Huntsman Cancer Hospital - 10%
  • Long-term care - 12%
  • Pain management - 5%
  • Inpatient palliative care consult service - 13%
  • ED shifts - 15%
