Welcome from the Chief

Welcome from Dr. John Fang

Welcome to the University of Utah Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition. Our division has a long-established history as a center of excellence in clinical care, research, and education in digestive and liver diseases. Our mission as an academic center for gastroenterology is inspired through the collaborative efforts of our faculty working towards new discoveries that will continue to provide better outcomes for our patients.

Our division provides state of the art clinical care at the University and Huntsman Cancer Hospitals and Clinics located throughout the beautiful Salt Lake Valley. We provide diagnostic and therapeutic primary, secondary and tertiary care in gastroenterology and hepatology as the major referral center for the 5 state mountain west region (Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming and Montana). We perform over 20,000 endoscopic procedures and see over 20,000 patients in our ambulatory GI and Hepatology clinics.

Our research mission is equally important and is fully integrated with our clinical and teaching missions. The research in our  division is diverse and faculty research interests include esophageal disorders, inflammatory bowel diseases, motility, allergic GI disorders, viral hepatitis, liver transplantation, interventional endoscopy, GI malignancies, and a commitment to quality improvement initiatives. Through the Huntsman Cancer Center and Cancer Control Population Sciences Center, faculty members also specialize in gastrointestinal cancer syndromes and endoscopic oncology. Our division, department and institution have many unique and innovative resources and programs for clinical and translational research. Our faculty have utilized the Utah Population Database, the only database of its kind in the United States, and one of the largest sources in the world to support biomedical and health-related research on genetics, epidemiology, demography and public health with information on more than 7 million individuals.

The GI fellowship program is a cornerstone of our Division. Our faculty are committed to the training and education of the next generation of gastroenterologists. We are continually inspired by the fresh insight our fellows bring to the program and our academic mission. To this end, many of our fellows chose to stay in academics and join our faculty after graduation.

Along with our faculty, fellows, and staff we are continuing to build upon our strong history, to innovate and advance the field of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. This is an exciting time in our Division and at the University of Utah Healthcare.
