Our three-year university-based internal medicine residency program is designed to provide you with the training required for a successful career in a wide variety of settings, from inpatient to outpatient, academic to community, and subspecialties to general medicine.

We offer a balance of inpatient, critical care, and ambulatory training experiences in three distinct hospital settings. Our mission is to mentor and support our residents to reach their professional goals. Clinically, we allow increasing autonomy and independence throughout training. We intend to graduate the very best clinical physicians in the country. Our faculty are prepared to mentor every resident in research as we believe that a strong research foundation is essential to those seeking academic careers. We are proud to say that we can meet each of you where you are as long as you show curiosity and interest. 

We offer an X+Y schedule throughout our training program. Our interns are scheduled on a 4+1 system, with at least every fifth week spent on an outpatient rotation. In reality, most interns have 18 weeks of non-inpatient medicine. As a categorical intern, the +1 ambulatory week will include five half-day continuity clinics, a variety of subspecialty and general medicine clinics, and ambulatory-focused conferences. On +1, Thursday afternoons are protected for group-dedicated teaching. To learn more about these experiences, see our Clinical Rotations page. In 2027 we plan to add a “pure choice” elective to every intern’s schedule.

Our PGY2 and 3 residents are on a 4+4 block schedule. This guarantees a minimum of 4 weekends off every 8 weeks and knowledge in advance of what your schedule is to facilitate planning.

Schedules are designed to provide maximum exposure to our many subspecialties early in your residency as you consider your future career. To increase subspecialty exposure in year 1, we have specialty-specific ward rotations and subspecialty consult rotations. As a PGY2 and PGY3, you will continue to have focused subspecialty rotations in both the inpatient and outpatient settings and allow you more opportunities to choose experiences that are important for your future career as that becomes more clear to you. Mentorships in year 2 and 3 become more focused toward a specific career path and we create a culture that fosters relationship building with faculty. 

The University of Utah is a leader in research and innovation, and we weave those threads throughout our training program. As a PGY2 and PGY3 resident, you will have protected time to pursue your interests outside our core curriculum, whether it is in research, exploring additional medical education experiences, participating in rural health rotations, or providing care to domestic underserved or international populations. In year 2 and 3 you can pursue up to 12 weeks of time outside our core curriculum.
