Welcome from the Medical Director

Welcome from the Sleep-Wake Center Medical Director

The University of Utah Sleep Medicine program is a multidisciplinary program for addressing sleep-related disorders. With faculty and staff from a variety of departments, including Internal Medicine (housing both the Divisions of Pulmonary Medicine and General Internal Medicine), Psychiatry, Neurology and Anesthesia.

While the program, along with its key behavioral component, has been in existence for two decades, it has grown significantly in the last few years. Access to sleep care along the Wasatch Front has been expanded by incorporating sleep clinics and home sleep testing within multiple University outpatient locations. Our streamlined processes and close faculty alignment ensure that patients receive the same quality care no matter the location.

The goals of the sleep program are to provide excellent clinical care, education and discovery for sleep and sleep disorders within the Mountain West. The program fosters quality education with an active sleep medicine fellowship program. Additionally, the program collaborates with a number of other departments to provide sleep-related education to their residents and other trainees. The sleep program continues to innovate as it begins to explore population management strategies to address the exploding prevalence of sleep disorders. We are also actively invested in standardizing processes and procedures, monitoring positive airway pressure adherence, and tracking long-term outcomes from sleep interventions. Aligned with this, research strategies within the program encompass translational research and emphasize consistent measurement of the effects of interventions on processes and outcomes.

Sleep medicine as a field thrives when it is conducted in a concerted manner with other specialties – in this regard, faculty and providers within the sleep program interact and work closely with a number of programs such as pulmonary medicine, cardiology, bariatric surgery, psychiatry, and neurology.

As we continue to enhance the scope of sleep medicine within Utah and beyond, I invite you to explore the website and contact us to learn more about how you can be involved.

Sincerely,

Krishna M. Sundar, MD
