Letter From Dr. Roger Freedman, Program Director

Dear CCEP Fellowship Applicant:

Thank you for your interest in the Clinical Cardiology Electrophysiology Fellowship at the University of Utah.

The EP program is comprised for 9 full time faculty supported by a number of nurse practitioners, physician assistants, device technicians, and other clinical support staff engaged in patient care and investigation at the University of Utah Hospital and the Salt Lake City VA Medical Center. As a referral center for the region, at the University we perform over 800 invasive procedures annually, including every type of catheter ablation, device implants, and pacemaker/ICD lead extractions. A similar array of procedures is performed at the VA Medical Center. We have busy clinics at the University Hospital and the Salt Lake VA Medical Center, as well as several outreach sites. A large range of research opportunities is available, including studies in cellular electrophysiology, whole animal physiology, epidemiology and database projects, and clinical projects pertaining to ablations and implantable devices.

Our clinical operations in cardiac EP were temporarily slowed by COVID earlier in 2020, but as of the summer of 2020 we have ramped back up to normal. In fact our overall volumes now actually exceed our pre-COVID baseline. As expected many of our patients’ clinic visits have been converted to virtual visits, but if anything this change has facilitated our value as a referral center and it has not lessened the educational experience for our fellows.

Currently we are approved by the ACGME to recruit two dedicated clinical CCEP fellows per year. We welcome applications from non-US citizens as well as US citizens. Non-US citizens must have a J-1 visa or be a permanent resident of the US. We accept applications through ERAS.

For more information about the cardiovascular medicine division at the University of Utah, please review our website. Please contact our program manager, Melissa (Missy) Grow, for more information about the program.

I look forward to your application.
