The Department of Internal Medicine of the University of Utah School of Medicine and Huntsman Cancer Institute are looking for motivated candidates that are interested in developing and expanding their clinical reasoning and medical expertise in providing compassionate, evidence-based care at the top of their licenses. 

The Hospital Medicine Post-Graduate (APC) Fellowship is a 12-month program and a joined effort between the Huntsman Cancer Institute, the University of Utah Pulmonary Medicine Division, and the Division of General Internal Medicine to provide structured learning for new graduate APCs, or seasoned APCs, who wish to further their knowledge in the respective Fellowship track.

Our program has expanded greatly since its inception in 2017 and now includes multiple specialty tracks, as described below. 
 

Traditional Acute Care Internal Medicine: Hospital medicine-focused content with the majority of time spent on hospitalist teams; includes opportunities to rotate with specialty services such as infectious disease, heart failure, palliative care, transplant surgery, and procedure teams. 

Rural Acute Care Internal Medicine: A combination of time spent at the main University of Utah campus with the hospitalist group and time at our partner hospital, Mountain West Medical Center in Tooele, UT. This track provides the opportunity to work with a rural demographic treating patients in both the Acute Internal Medicine floor and the Intensive Care Unit at Mountain West, while still having access to the resources and didactic content that the traditional Acute Care Internal Medicine track offers. 

Inpatient Pulmonary Medicine: A new track as of 2024 in conjunction with the University of Utah Division of Pulmonary Medicine. This track focuses on inpatient pulmonary medicine with exposure to outpatient pulmonary clinics such as Cystic Fibrosis, Lung Transplant, and Dyspnea clinic, as well as specialty rotations including general internal medicine, heart failure, and ICU.

Inpatient Hematology-Oncology: The Inpatient Hematology-Oncology track is primarily based at the Huntsman Cancer Hospital. The core clinical experience includes hematology, BMT and oncology rotations. This track's unique curriculum offers an opportunity to rotate in Immunocompromised Infectious Disease, Cardiac-Oncology, and BMT procedure clinic to elevate the experience and develop bone marrow biopsy skills. 

Outpatient Hematology-Oncology: A new track opening in 2027 for APC graduates interested in outpatient gastrointestinal and liver disease. This track will offer exposure to inpatient and outpatient GI and liver pathologies, as well as liver transplant care. Fellows will gain foundational knowledge in gastrointestinal nutrition and the management of feeding tubes, eosinophilic esophagitis and inflammatory bowel disease specialty care, as well as comprehensive education in the principles of therapeutic endoscopy and biliary disease, including clinical decision-making and multidisciplinary care. The primary goal of the fellowship is to help APCs broaden and strengthen their medical knowledge and clinical skills, through a systematic, collaborative, and evidence-based curriculum consisting of both didactic and clinical components. This program is recognized and accepted for membership by The Association of Postgraduate PA Programs (APPAP) and the Association of Post Graduate APRN Programs (APGAP).

Currently, the program offers a stipend of $85,000 per year for all tracks. Full-time benefits are offered which include health and dental insurance, as well as 401K contributions. 

There are two applications cycles for a spring and fall start date. Applications for a fall start date are accepted from January 1st through April 15th, and applications for a spring start date are accepted from September 1 through November 15th.
