Interview Day Information
We require interviews for our program, which are typically conducted from mid October through mid December. If you are selected to interview with our program, you will receive an invitation via Thalamus. Due to a high volume of applications, we are unlikely to extend interview offers to applicants who do not signal our program.
In partnership with several of our peer programs, the Internal Medicine Residency Program at the University of Utah Health has decided not to participate in the NRMP list lock pilot. All interviews will be conducted virtually, and we will not be offering any in-person interviews for the 2026–2027 application season. We hope this decision helps to ease financial and logistical burdens for applicants during the recruitment process.
Physician Scientist Training Program (PSTP) applicants will participate in the categorical interview day as well as additional PSTP activities, including interviews with research and fellowship faculty.
Primary Care Track Program applicants will participate in the categorical interview day as well as additional Primary Care Track activities, including interviews with faculty.
Medicine-Geriatrics Pathway applicants will participate in the categorical interview day, including interviews with medicine and geriatrics faculty.
All categorical interviews will include a short individual meeting with the Program Director. All times are in the Mountain time zone.

Interview Timeline
We require interviews for our program, which will be conducted virtually from late October through mid-December. Upon applying to our program, you will receive more details regarding the timeline of interview offerings via Thalamus communication. If you are selected to interview with our program, you will receive an invitation via Thalamus.
Signals
Over the last two interview seasons, we have reviewed our match data with regard to signaling. Consistent with national trends, our data shows that the applicants we have matched have signaled our program. In previous years, we reviewed a small number of applicants who did not signal; this is no longer the case. Beginning this season, we will only review applicants who signal our program, and we are unlikely to extend interviews to applicants who do not.
Virtual Social
We will not offer a virtual social the night before your interview day. We have found on post-match surveys that applicants find these low yield and obligatory. Instead, we will offer confidential free chat-time with two different groups of our residents built into the interview day.
NRMP List Lock
Along with the majority of our peer programs, we will not participate in the NRMP list lock pilot.
Post Interview
We request that applicants do not send routine thank-you notes. These will go unanswered. If you have any questions after your interview day, we welcome those via email.
Second Looks
New this season, we will offer an in-person “second look”. We have decided to offer this opportunity due to popular demand and an increase in number of applicants using an “informal” second look over the last two seasons. There is absolutely no obligation to attend and your attendance will have no bearing on your candidacy either way. The benefit is for the applicant to see our city, our hospitals, and meet our residents. More information about the structure of the visit and dates will be forthcoming as the season is underway. We anticipate these events to occur in mid-late January.
Thank You Notes
The University of Utah Internal Medicine Residency Program requests that applicants do not send routine thank you notes or emails. Such communications will not routinely receive a reply.
We understand at the interview season can be an expensive for applicants, in terms of both time and money. Second look visits are neither required nor encouraged.
This policy is in alignment with the NRMP rules and Code of Conduct and the APDIM Statement on Post-Interview Communication and Second Visits (released June 2014).
