Cardiovascular Medicine Faculty Recognized for Humanitarian Work
Dr. John Ryan, MD, has been awarded the Arnold P. Gold Humanism in Medicine Award by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation. The Arnold P. Gold Foundation is dedicated to 'keeping healthcare human' and strives to infuse the human connection into healthcare by engaging schools, health systems, companies and clinicians.
This national award recognizes a faculty physician who exemplifies the qualities of a caring and compassionate mentor in the teaching and advising of medical students. The recipient also needs to possess personal qualities necessary for the practice of patient-centered medicine by teaching ethics, empathy, and service by example.
Dr. Ryan is a cardiologist with extensive training and experience in research investigation and clinical patient care. He is an internationally renowed specialist in pulmonary hypertension and has an appointment in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. After postgraduate training in Internal Medicine and General Surgery at Cork University Hospital in Cork, Ireland, Dr. Ryan moved to Boston University, where he became Chief Resident. After Boston, he completed a fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Chicago and was the Department of Medicine's Faculty Teacher of the Year. At the University of Utah, Dr. Ryan continues to be involved in medical education and has been awarded the Department of Family Medicine Outstanding Preceptor of the Year Award.
