Physician Scientist Training Program (PSTP) Trainee Receives NIH Grant Award
Dr. Eleni Tseliou, a rising star physician-scientist in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Utah, has just received a K08 award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Eleni Tseliou, MD, PhD graduated from the University of Athens School of Medicine in Greece and continued her training at the Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA. She joined the Physician Scientist Training Program (PSTP) at the University of Utah in 2017, a program that is designed for the accelerated, intensive clinical and research training of excellent physician-scientists. Through this program, Dr. Tseliou has completed Internal Medicine, General Cardiology, and Advanced Heart Failure clinical training. Under the mentorship of Dr. Stavros Drakos (Professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine) and Scott Summers (Professor and Chair, Department of Nutrition & Integrative Physiology), she recently received a K08 award (Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Awards) from the NHLBI to study the role of glycosylated ceramides and fatty acids in heart failure and myocardial recovery. The central hypothesis of this project is that reduced expression of a gene that catalyzes the glycosylation of the lipids ceramides leads to the deregulation of fatty-acid metabolism that predisposes to heart failure.
Dr. Tseliou will join the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine to continue pursuing her clinical and research interests.
