Dr. Matthew Samore Receives Award from the Department of Health and Human Services and Centers for Disease Control & Prevention
Congratulations to Dr. Matthew Samore, Professor & Chief of the Division of Epidemiology, on his new award from the Department of Health and Human Services and Centers for Disease Control & Prevention for his project, “COVID SHEPheRD Vaccine: Effectiveness Among Healthcare Personnel.
Project Summary
The University of Utah has joined a large-scale, multi-site observational study of the effectiveness of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine to prevent laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 infection in healthcare personnel. The project is funded through the CDC’s Safety and Healthcare Epidemiology Prevention Research Development (SHEPheRD) program. Healthcare personnel employed by the University of Utah who have a SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic test performed because of the presence of symptoms will be recruited to participate. The study follows a test negative design, which is an efficient way to estimate vaccine effectiveness. Cases, defined as individuals who have a positive SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic test, will be compared to controls, individuals with a negative test, with respect to vaccine exposure. The study will yield important information about the real-world effectiveness of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. This project is led by Drs. Matthew Samore and Jeanmarie Mayer in the Department of Internal Medicine.
