Dr. Yan-Ting Shiu Receives Funding for Chronic Renal Insufficiency (CRIC) Pilot Grant

The Division of Nephrology & Hypertension once again congratulates Dr. Yan-Ting Shiu! Her NIDDK Chronic Renal Insufficiency (CRIC) pilot grant “Role of Noncoding RNAs in Vascular Function in Chronic Kidney Disease – A pilot study in CRIC” has been funded by NIDDK-funded CRIC Opportunity Pool. This project is funded for $150,000 for a year.

Project Overview

Given that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death and vascular access dysfunction is the most common problem in hemodialysis patients, it is imperative to better understand their underlying common or separate pathogenic mediators. Identifying these mediators will provide an important rationale for developing innovative therapeutics to enhance vascular function and vascular access. This project will use the biospecimens and datasets of the NIDDK-funded Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) Study to investigate an innovative hypothesis: noncoding RNAs are important regulators of vascular function that determines the development of cardiovascular disease and selection of vascular access types in patients receiving hemodialysis.
