Yan-Ting Shiu, PhD, Awarded 1 NIH R01 Grant and 2 VA Merit Review Awards in 2024
Yan-Ting Shiu, PhD, Professor in the Division of Nephrology & Hypertension in the Department of Internal Medicine, has just received three new grants, with a total direct cost of nearly 4 million dollars. The R01 is titled “Integrin Activation to Prevent Early Arteriovenous Fistula Failure in End-stage Renal Disease Patients,” an MPI R01 with three PIs: Y. Shiu (University of Utah), R. Vazquez-Padro (University of Miami), and V. Gupta (University of Texas at Galveston).
The two VA merit review awards, with Dr. Shiu as the principal investigator, are “Translational Study of RAGE-SIRT1 Therapy for Arteriovenous Fistula Maturation” and “BCCMA: Cardiovascular Remodeling following Arteriovenous Fistula Creation: Aging Contributes to Adverse Arteriovenous Fistula Remodeling.” All of these projects aim to address a critical unmet clinical need in hemodialysis vascular access dysfunction.
Dr. Shiu’s research draws from her engineering talents and strong knowledge of vascular biology and medicine. Her laboratory uses experimental and computational techniques to conduct clinical and laboratory research. She has been a top federally funded PI in hemodialysis vascular access over the past decade (2014-2024) and is a thought leader in this area of research.
