Frederick G.P. Welt, M.D. has been appointed to the new position of Vice Chair for Clinical Services and Chief Value Officer (CVO) within the Department of Internal Medicine. His first day serving in this capacity will be September 1, 2016. He will be joining our current CVOs Nathan Wanner (inpatient) and Mary Beth Scholand (outpatient). In this new role, Fred will lead the patient care activities within the Department to ensure we are well aligned with the broader UUHC strategy and goals. He will serve as a liaison between UUHC and UUMG executives, division chiefs, CVOs, medical directors, and faculty to establish standards and manage expectations for clinical services across the Department. I know that Fred will be an important advocate in the development of strategic initiatives in quality, safety, efficacy, timeliness, and appropriateness of support services provided within our clinical service areas.
Although he has only been with the University of Utah for a short period, Fred’s success prior and since he joined our faculty shows his drive for excellence and improving patient care. Fred is an accomplished physician and administrator who currently serves as the Associate Chief for the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Medical Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, and the Margaret A. Amundsen Endowed Professorship. Prior to coming to the University of Utah he served as the Director of Interventional Cardiology as well as Director of the Invasive Cardiovascular Experimental Laboratory at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA, where he was involved in the research of novel devices to treat structural heart disease as well as large animal models for stem cell therapy for cardiac disease. He specializes in both interventional coronary and structural heart disease procedures, including the performance of Trans Catheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) and complex coronary interventions.
As Associate Chief for the Cardiovascular Division at Utah, Fred has been critical to the new culture and esprit de corps in the division at large while simultaneously transforming the clinical, academic, and educational missions of the University of Utah Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. His tireless commitment to the division's extensive outreach efforts over 20 different sites has further strengthened the University of Utah's presence in the five state region. His easy humor, straight-thinking, and work ethic has garnered the respect, admiration, and collaboration of his physician/surgeon colleagues, administrative staff/nurses, and other allied providers. He will continue his leadership roles in the Cardiology Division while taking on the new departmental responsibilities.
