New Faculty - September 2020

Christopher A. Groh, MD

Assistant Professor
Cardiovascular Medicine - Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology - U of U Main Hospital

Christopher (Chris) Groh is from the suburbs of Chicago. He received his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University, and then came back to Chicago to start his medical training by earning his medical degree at the University of Illinois, Chicago and completing his internal medicine residency at Northwestern University. He and his wife then decided to venture out West for his cardiology and electrophysiology fellowships at UCSF.

His interest in electrophysiology stems from his background in engineering. Several of his college courses used various cardiac rhythm disturbances as teaching models, but he did not realize a clinical subspecialty focusing on electrophysiology existed at the time. It was not until his cardiology elective in medical school that the bridge between his undergraduate experience and ultimate career was formed.

Chris performs catheter ablation procedures to treat complex arrhythmias including supraventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, premature ventricular contractions, and ventricular tachycardia from both an endocardial and epicardial approach. He also has expertise in the implantation of cardiac devices including pacemakers, defibrillators, and biventricular devices.

He and his family are excited about their new adventure in Utah. His year-and-a-half-old son Teddy is keeping him quite busy outside of work, and his wife Amanda somehow manages to keep the family in line during these challenging times even while expecting their second child in early 2021. Outside of work, Chris and his family enjoy water and snow skiing, hiking, being outdoors, and cooking.

Later completing a fellowship in sleep medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. She decided to pursue a career in medicine due in part, to her enjoyment of undergrad biology and neuroscience as well as due to the influence of many brilliant physician role models she had the opportunity to interact with. In addition to enjoying her time in direct patient care, she also enjoys teaching both medical students as well as residents, specifically providing more insight into neurological as well as sleep disorders. She enjoys the outdoors and when not in the clinic will most likely be found hiking or biking.

Under Graduate Student Researcher
Nephrology - VA SLC

Shelly is a student at the University of Utah from Draper, Utah. She is currently a third year studying Biomedical Engineering. After researching and searching for a research lab to join, she came across Dr. Shiu's Biomedical Research lab that crossed off all her interests and was able to join the lab as an Undergraduate Student Researcher. One fact about Shelly is that she loves music and plays over 6 different types of instruments.

Kyle grew up in the Salt Lake City area and received his BS in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Utah. He and his family relocated to Boston for graduate school where Kyle received his MS and PhD from Boston University in Biomedical Engineering, in addition to having many fun family adventures exploring the beautiful northeast. Upon completion of his schooling, Kyle worked as a Research Scientist for Philips Research North America, specializing in integrating NGS genomic data with EMR data utilizing artificial intelligence for both epidemiology and oncology applications.

After many years adventuring in Boston, he and his family wanted to come back to Utah and Kyle was able to join Huntsman as a Data Scientist, with a continued focus on integration of heterogeneous types of medical data to improve patient care. Outside of work, Kyle, his wife, and 3 boys love playing board games, sports (go Jazz!), and exploring the mountains via hiking, camping, fishing and skiing.
