Drs. Michael Rubin & Makoto Jones Receive VA Quality Enhancement Research Initiative Grant
The Division of Epidemiology congratulates Drs. Michael Rubin, MD, PhD, MS and Makoto Jones, MD, MS for their new VA Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) grant to study antimicrobial resistance and implementation science in the VA healthcare system. QUERI was launched in 1998 as part of a system-wide transformation aimed at improving the quality of healthcare for veterans and whose mission is to improve care using research evidence to improve clinical practice.
Project Narrative
The CARRIAGE II program is a direct counterattack to the growing crisis of antimicrobial resistance and emerging infectious threats, comprising a series of related implementation and quality improvement projects unified around the common goal of arresting and potentially reversing the spread of antimicrobial resistance in VA healthcare facilities and beyond. CARRIAGE II projects will target the behaviors and processes at the critical points in the chain of infection that facilitate the development and spread of antibiotic-resistant pathogens, thereby breaking the cycle of transmission and improving Veteran health and safety. The findings from this QUERI program have the potential to transform biosurveillance, infection control, and antimicrobial prescribing practices throughout the VA healthcare system. We expect CARRIAGE II to have substantial and long-lasting impact in improving the quality of care and safety of our Veterans by informing future VA-wide prevention and patient safety efforts.
